Beating the Winter Blues
Ah, winter! The season of cozy blankets, hot cocoa, and a general lack of sunlight that makes it all too easy to want to crawl into bed and hibernate until spring. While it’s a magical time for some, it can also lead to the dreaded "winter blues" for others. Unless you're a performer, where staying motivated and energized is essential to creating content, performing, and engaging with your audience. In that case, this seasonal slump can feel ROUGH. But don’t worry; we have a few ideas to help the colder months become more bearable and keep the motivation going!
It’s Time to Boost Your Physical and Mental Energy
Winter’s cold grip can zap your energy, making even the most motivated among us want to curl up and binge-watch Netflix instead of hitting those online goals. The key to avoiding the seasonal slump is to take extra care of your body AND mind.
Move That Body: Even if you’re not a gym rat, staying active is key during winter. You don’t have to run a marathon or go wild; just a quick walk in the fresh air or a 20-minute stretch session can get your blood pumping. Plus, exercise releases those lovely endorphins that make you feel good! If you can’t go on a walk, release some of those very same endorphins through a bit of a self-love masturbation sesh just for yourself!
Light It Up: One of the reasons people feel off during the winter is the lack of sunlight. We’re all familiar with the moody winter days when the sun barely rises before it sets. Even if it’s a bit gloomy outside, make it a point to sit out in the fresh air for a little bit to refresh your senses.
Mindfulness Over Stress: The winter blues can cause some serious stress. But you don’t have to let it take over! Take 5–10 minutes daily to meditate or practice deep breathing. You’ll be amazed how a few minutes of mindfulness can help clear your head and reduce that late winter-induced anxiety.
Set Small, Fun Goals
If you’ve ever tried to tackle a big project and felt overwhelmed, you know the struggle of trying to do everything at once. During the colder months, motivation can dip even further, making it harder to focus. But here’s the trick: break it down into smaller, bite-sized chunks that are easier to tackle on days when you feel like resting.
Daily and Weekly To-Do Lists: Instead of creating one massive goal for the season (like "Become the top content creator"), break your to-do list into small, actionable steps. For example, today might be "Film one video," tomorrow could be "Respond to fan messages," and so on.
Celebrate the Wins: It’s easy to overlook progress, especially when the days feel long and cold. But trust me, even the smallest achievement deserves a high-five. Have you finished a video? Woo-hoo! Got through your fan messages? Amazing! Every little win will keep you motivated to tackle the next task. And if you need to rest, sign off and rest! It’s important to do what is best for you and find that balance.
Create a Cozy, Productive Routine
Something about the cold makes you want to stay in bed all day. And while I get it (the bed is amazing), the key to keeping your productivity high is to find balance and build a routine that works for you during the winter months.
Start Strong in the Morning: Having a routine that includes something uplifting to start your day can set the tone for the rest of it. This could mean taking a few minutes to stretch, making a cup of your favorite tea, or setting a positive intention for the day. Trust me, how you begin the morning can influence how productive you’ll be all day.
Stick to Set Hours: When it’s dark outside and you’re feeling low on energy, it’s tempting to let your schedule slip. But staying consistent with your work hours, whether you're creating, filming, or doing admin work, helps you stay on track.
Wind Down Properly: Winter nights come early; we all deserve a little downtime. Allow yourself a nighttime routine that helps you relax after a long day. It can be some self-care, watching a favorite show, or even taking a bath. This allows your body and mind to rest and recharge fully so you’re ready for another productive day.
Engage with Your Fans and Peers
The winter months can make you feel a little isolated, especially when staying inside and avoiding social interaction is easy. But here’s the thing: winter can be the perfect time to engage even more with your community, fans and fellow creators.
Get Social: Staying active on social media isn’t just about posting pictures or content—it’s about engaging with your audience. Take the time to reply to comments, post behind-the-scenes sneak peeks, or even ask for feedback. Keeping your followers involved will not only help you stay motivated but also remind you that you’re not alone in your creative journey.
Collaborate with Peers: Winter can be a great time to connect with other creators in the industry. Collaborations don’t have to be limited to physical meetups—virtual collaborations can be just as fun and rewarding. Whether brainstorming ideas, filming together, or sharing tips, collaborating with others can spark new ideas and reignite your motivation.
Check-In with Yourself: The winter months can sometimes leave us feeling down or overwhelmed, especially if we’ve been working hard non-stop. Be sure to take a moment to check in with your mental and emotional state. If you’re feeling off, don’t be afraid to discuss it with a friend, therapist, or fellow creator. You don’t have to do this alone.
Switch Things Up to Stay Creative
If you’re feeling stuck creatively, winter can feel like one big slog. But the good news? The cold months are the perfect time to switch things up and inject some fresh energy into your work.
Experiment with New Ideas: Sticking to the same content format or style can feel boring for you sometimes. If it does, challenge yourself to try something new! Maybe it’s a new video format or exploring a different genre. It will break the monotony and spark some fun, creative energy that fuels your work for the rest of the season.
Rework Your Space: It’s always a great time for a little cleaning (even if it doesn’t feel like it). Rearranging your workspace, upgrading your lighting, or adding some cozy elements to your filming space can make a big difference. A fresh environment can help you feel more inspired and ready to take on the season with fresh energy.
Take Breaks (Seriously): Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is to step away. It sounds counterintuitive, but taking regular breaks is crucial to keeping your creativity and motivation high. This allows your mind to rest and allows you to come back with more energy when you choose to return. It’s your mental health first, always.
By prioritizing your health, breaking tasks into manageable goals, sticking to a cozy routine, engaging with your community, and keeping your work creative, you’ll keep that winter funk as far away as possible. The best part? Spring is right around the corner! Stay warm, stay creative, and don’t forget to give yourself some kudos for all you have accomplished so far this year!
